"Identity" and "Diversity" are often times not the first words that come to mind when we discuss technology. Usually if the topic of of technology arises we think about innovation and systems, completely neglecting any semblance of human interaction that is present in the tech world. In order to dissect the intersections between "Identity", "Diversity", and "Technology", we must first approach each definition independently. Technology is the culmination of instruments and processes in the production of physical devices that serve as goods and services. Identity is how we define ourselves, our society, and even our possessions. We ascribe attributes to anything and everything, and these attributes become part of their identity - whether it be personal, social, or collective. Lastly, diversity is essentially a variety or range of things in a certain sector. Often times we suspect that diversity applies to human populations and demographics, but diversity is also something that is present in our thoughts, our opinions, and generally our everyday lives.
We fail to see just how these words are connected- technology is something we as humans cannot seem put ourselves into while we can perfectly see the human dimensions of identity and diversity. Technology is ever advancing, but not without diversity and identity in technology; otherwise the field would be incredibly stagnant. Diversity and the desire to continually improve our social identity is something that has begun to progress since the beginning of time. Our idea of modernization directly corresponds to this desire to create a more diverse world, as we seek to break down barriers- not just societal, but physical, mental, and ultimately technological. The technology industry has captured our idea of innovation as a method to accelerate progress. Broadening the tech world to include diversity and a sense of identity would dramatically strengthen innovation in the industry.
